John and I both quieted down, and she began "The patter of rain wakes you from your sleep, as your caravan rolls along the road."

So began my very first real table-top campaign of Dungeons and Dragons (v 3.5). It was a blast. John and I were both knowledgeable about the game and its mechanics, but Travis was a complete and utter novice. A lot of time was spent explaining how combat worked, or how to roll a die, and other elementary stuff most players take for granted. That being said, Travis added a very interesting element to the game. Once he learned that you're allowed to throw a roll pretty much any time, he took advantage of it. Pretty soon, every person that glanced at us was subjected to a Sense Motives check. It got pretty funny. At one point, someone cast Entangle on us, and Travis tried to use a Sense Motive on the trees that tried to grab us.

We played for three or four hours, at least. Probably more. Rolling up our characters was the hardest part, especially for Travis, who didn't even know what a d6 is. But now that we've got our characters, we're ready for this Saturday (or Sunday, if I can't get Jamie to reschedule me to work on Sundays instead).

Roxie says she can make the campaign last a year. I hope it's true. I had a LOT of fun Saturday night.

Dark Sky Entertainment

Two very exciting pieces of news today. Firstly, I have been officially hired as a Customer Service Representative for Dark Sky Entertainment, publisher of the MMORTS game Beyond Protocol. Originally, I bombed a few questions on the evaluation test, and the Jamie, the executive producer, told me that I wasn't going to be taken on at this point. Well, last night, I got a call at 8:50 PM from Jamie. He told me that if I wanted a job, I could show up at the office at 11 AM today. Well, you can bet your candy ass I showed up at the office. Only problem was that I greatly overestimated how long it would take to get to said office. I was an hour and a half early. I beat Jamie. He let me in to the office, and he talked to me and told me how to piss him off. After that, I spent about three hours grinding through the longest tutorial I've ever played. No lie. Once that was over, Will had me help with some work. I'm going to sign and NDA and Non-Compete Agreement soon, so I won't give too many details, just to be safe. After a few hours of that, I was dismissed, and asked to return.

Okay, I'm tired as hell, and not up to writing another section. I'll write a second post tomorrow morning after math class. Good night!

Picasa Web Albums

This is really exciting for me, so I'll write up a quick post on it. A day or two ago, Google released their beta of Picasa 3. They added a bunch of new features and redid the UI, making things look a lot nicer. One of the most exciting things they added, though, is face recognition (to Picasa Web Albums, at least). It's almost like Facebook's face tagging system, except photos that you upload to a web album are automatically scanned for faces, and if the face matches someone already tagged, Picasa will suggest that name for you. Also worth noting is that your GMail contacts can be tied to faces. I'm sure there's a practical application here, but really, I'm most excited about how well Google's services all tie together.

Also, I've set up Google Analytics for the blog. I'm not sure why, but my Adsense doesn't work at all.

Practice and Life Story Part 1

I'm going to try to update at least once a week, so I can get stronger in my content-fu. I'll try to practice my writing here, and see how long I can make posts without filling them with BS content.

So I've started working on Project Euler. So far, I've solved problems 1 through 4. I think I've got the fifth one solved, but my loops seem to be infinite and the program hangs forever. Annoying. I'm taking a break from the whole furiously-coding thing. Math and programming is fun, but when I hit a wall like this, it takes me a bit of time to untangle it all in my mind. I'll come back to it in a day or two and I'll see right through it all.

As promised, I'm going to fill in a small chapter of my life story between now and two years ago, when I abandoned ship out of boredom. So, the story begins.

It was my second year (or my first? christ, I can't remember anymore) at Colonial. I think it was my second. I was riding the bus home, and this cute chick with pink-and-black hair (I'm a sucker for crazy hair colors) asks me for the time. We start talking, and we end up friends. Well, she, who goes by the name Mercedes, talks almost incessantly about this game called Unwritten Legends. Eventually, she helps me and a friend sign up for the game, and we begin playing. It was my first real MUD, so it was awkward at first, but I soon found myself comfortable with text-only interfaces. Then, I learned that UL was very roleplay-oriented. It was here that I met Kaylie. Our characters hit it off. It wasn't too long before we started getting closer to each other for real.

December 2, I skipped school, and sat around at home all day long. She came home from school herself, and I saw her get online. The original log is lost to a Windows reinstall, but the conversation went something like this:
Kaylie: I like you.
Me: Me too.
Kaylie: You wanna go out with me?
Me: Yeah, definitely.
And so began a new chapter in my life. Part 2 of however many I want to make is coming soon.

Ho boy.

Jesus. It's been a long time. Little more than two years. Well, a lot has happened. Trying to describe all of it in a single post will just ruin the post, so I'll keep it short, and fill in the missing pieces over my updates in the future.

I've got a girlfriend now. She and I got together nearly two years ago. In fact, shortly after I stopped posting here. We've been through a lot of shit together, but we're still here, so something's working right.

I'm in college. I actually managed to PASS high school, which shocked me as much as anyone. There was a mad rush at the end of my senior year to earn credits; I had failed three classes, and because I wanted to graduate on time, I took all three online. In the space of about three months, I managed to take three 36-week courses. It was the first time my parents ever though I achieved something worthwhile. Which didn't last long; now that I'm in college, dad is on my ass about getting a job, which, in this economy, is nigh impossible.

I'm taking a very active role in a beta testing environment. Unwritten Legends, a MUD that's been in beta for maybe a decade, has just added a wiki to its site. This has spurred me into wanting to make a contribution. For reasons I can explain in later posts, I haven't been playing UL very much, but now, I think I'm going to be hardcore about helping.

This is me and Kaylie. I look like an utter tool in the monkey suit, but Kaylie is an angel. She and I both busted our balls to get together for my prom night, and it was...something.

That's enough for one post. If I spill it all at once, then I won't have much content for another year. I'm out.

On my to-do list: fill in the two years I've been absent.

Back Again

Once again, I've decided to take up blogging again. I've done several things in my absence, none of which are worth mentioning in any amount of detail. Despite that fact, I will now summarize some of the more important things:

I bought a Python book.

I've written several new scripts, one of which was distributed among a few of my friends.

I have a debit card. The idea is to allow filesharing between private groups.

Basically, you have several categories of files to share. They could be family photos, porn, and music. Then, you create a whitelist for each of these groups. This means you tell Allpeers "This guy, this guy, and this guy can acess my family photos" and so on. The real kicker is this: The whole thing runs on top of a BitTorrent client.

This is really good news, especially for those without broadband. But, I mean...odds are, if you don't have broadband, you don't have Firefox and you're a loser.

Remember, have fun, and geek out!

Tags: firefox, allpeers, p2p, geek, computer, tool, app

Google Homepage

It's amazing how awesome google homepage is. Dragon Fable, a game by Artix Entertainment, has finally gone into semi-public beta. Semi-public means that any Guardian who wants to sign up to play can. Sadly, the public cannot. So far, there's only one quest that is so easy, you can beat it without breaking a sweat at level two. However, I know that this is only the beta, and that the full game will be much more challenging. I'll update on my testing occasionally, if there's anything worth mentioning.

Remember, have fun, and geek out!

Tags: game, Adventure Quest, game, , blog, cool, free

Update

Mood: Geek

I've just got a couple of things to talk about in this post. If you aren't, then stick with normal Firefox.

Remember, have fun, and geek out!

Mozilla.org- Firefox home site

Anaconda. Names haven't been changed. Screw the innocent.

The scenario should be familiar. Your chatting in your favorite IRC channel, when all of a sudden, cooldudeman432 pops in. Quoth cooldudeman432, “Lolz roffle wat r u dooing? Im the l337 haxx0r! I hax ur comp! I put virus on ur comp!” Seem familiar? It does to me.

Some people may not know it, but an epidemic is spreading on the Internet It's called “grammaritis.” It's characterized by a peculiar lack of grammatical correctness, and lack of coherence. There is now only one known cure for this disease: a swift kick in the balls and a sound beating with a hardback copy of Don Quixote.

Seriously though. These people, who think they are “l337”, who think they are “haxx0rs”, are a pain. If the English language were Julius Caesar, these retards would be Brutus. The source of this problem is laziness. These people are too lazy too type out the whole word. This has to stop.

My real solution: Include an automatic spell-checker in IRC clients, web-browsers, and anything involved with typing and posting on the Internet This would fix almost everyone's problems. Of course, I still like the idea of beating these retards up.

Mozilla.org- Firefox home site

More traffic? My first impression of it was "Hmm...not bad. I like it." Considering that this is one of my first forays into anime-watching, that's pretty good. The plot so far is interesting. It's deep enough to keep my attention for the duration of an episode, but not so deep that I can't catch up in the middle of the series. Cause that's what happened. I haven't done anything of major importance, recently. However, I am writing an essay for English. It's a character analysis essay about Edmond Dantes , from The Count of Monte Cristo. Of course, this isn't pleasure reading, but the reading was pleasureable. Try figuring that one out. ;)

Also, I've started working on another Python program, which basically rolls a d100, for two people, compares the result, and declares who ever has the higer number a winner. Once I get the framework set up, I may think about adding support for three, or perhaps four people. If I do get it to work, I'll try to figure out how to upload it, and let you guys play around with it.

I guess that's all, so I'll let you go. I finsihed my Python program! It took a week or so of hard work, but considering that it's the first original, successful program I've written, it's worth it. All it does is perform some uome functions that you'd need for a science class (i.e. finding volume, density, temperature conversions). It's a really simple program, so it's nothing to brag about. I suppose that's all for now, so I'm gonna sign off.

Mozilla.org- Firefox home site

IF commenter != spammer: print "W00t!"

Mood: Geek

Ye gods! Keith has also posted his throughts from an engineer's perspective (although admittadly still not a rocket scientist). "The challenges are many, but it has been a viable option since carbon nanotubes, structures so strong that one the width of a human hair could lift a car, were invented. A space elevator could be between 10 and 2000 times cheaper than conventional technology and will force NASA to change just about everything they do. Hopefully one day that bureaucracy will wake up and realize it."

There ya have it. A space elevator is a "viable option." So basically, they are creating an early prototype of the fabled "space elevator." This has incredible implications.

With this technology, the huge costly rockets of today will be obsolete. A trip into space could be acheived with relative cheapness and ease. Shipping supplies to a shuttle, or even a space station, would be quite easy. I hope that this technology comes into fruition, because if it does, space will slowly be easily more conquerable. Well, I guess that's all for now. In my most humble opinion, they are quite different. To most people, a nerd is someone who isn't "popular." They don't have loud friends, and don't tell loud jokes, or are into computers, and Magic: The Gathering. These people also think that nerds and geeks are the same thing.

In my opinion, the only difference between a nerd and a geek is that a geek is happy. A geek is proud of being able to program in thirteen languages, read HTML like they read a book, and know what megahertz are, and how they apply to computers. A nerd is someone who, becuase of low self-esteem, avoid social situations. They are ashamed of being what they are, of not fitting into the mold of what's "cool."

So, in summation: When I say Mood: Nerd; I'm feeling sad and depressed. When Mood: Geek is shown, it means that I'm in a good mood. Also, I'll sometimes put up Mood: Meh which means that I'm either really tired, or just sorta..."blah".

Mozilla.org- Firefox home site

WB- Raper of memories

I feel pretty, oh so pretty...I feel pretty and witty and gay! Oh well...baby steps.

In other news, there is no other news. ;)

Mozilla.org- Firefox home site

Well...this is my personal blog, so, I guess I'm obligated to post personal stuff on it. Anyway...here goes nothing.

*sigh* Another year, another school. Having only been in a high school for one year previous to this, I'm kinda lost as far as what to expect. Homecoming caught me by suprise again. However, this time, I think I'll go. I'm hoping I'll get the courage to ask one of my friends, but...I'm a gutless coward. >.< No, not really. I suffer from "nice guy syndrome". I'm so worried about being nice to ladies, I seem inconfident, and ladies don't like that. *sigh* Life goes on...

In other news...I dont' have other news. Firefox vs. IE

Well...I suppose this post is inevitable in all blogs. Firefox vs. IE.

Now, I'll have to vouch for Firefox in this fight. IMO, Firefox is has more positives than IE.

I'll do a side-by-side comparison, so that everything's clear.

Speed:

Firefox vs. IE

Winner: IE. Firefox is slower than IE, but for a good reason. Trident, IE's rendering engine, is ancient, as far as HTML rendering goes. It is not standards-compliant, and because it's old, it may completely ignore some tags in a page, or show them incorrectly.

User Friendliness:

Firefox vs. IE

Winner: Firefox. Now, getting used to Firefox's user interface is a little confusing for long-time IE users, but once you do master it, then Firefox is easy and simple.

COmplexity

Firefox vs. IE

Winner: Firefox. This is a tough call, because tastes differ. However, I'm personally leaning towards Firefox, because it's as complicated as you want it to be. If you want just a basic browser, then it can do that. If you want a fully tricked out browser, with tons of tools and gizmos, then Firefox can do it.

Aesthetic values

Firefox vs. IE

Winner: Firefox. This is where IE is blown out of the water. Firefox offers, at last count 108 themes. IE's graphics remain static and unchanging and boring.

Security

Firefox vs. IE

Winner: Firefox. This is a big one. Firefox has a lot of settings disabled by default( Javascript, ActiveX, etc). This means that whereas a javascript program in IE could launch a flurry of pop-ups, it couldn't in Firefox. Also, downloads never happen without your permission in Firefox. Can IE do that? ...Nope.

Overall winner: Firefox. In four of the most important areas, Firefox beat IE.

I'm not trying to force Firefox on you. I'm trying to show you an alternative. It's your choice if you want to use IE, or Opera, or K-Meleon, or any of the browsers. However, I'm trying to show you which is better, in my humble opinion. Firefox is free to download, free to keep, free to uninstall. NO risks. No reason not to try it.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://nerdorgeek.blogspot.com/2005/08/why-delay-inevitable-firefox-vs-ie.html' title='Why delay the inevitable? We're moving to Orland, which is in Florida, for those of you who don't know. I'm exhausted, because my room was left for last. Now, we've just got to drive to our new house. I hate road-trips that long. Especially when my sister's in the car. I'm going to be stuck with her for 7+ hours.
